Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre

Basics

Tradition:
Mahasi

Welcome to the website of the Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre. We are located in a tranquil setting in the small town of Medlow Bath in the Blue Mountains, two hours by train from Sydney.

We provide facilities for the teaching and practice of satipatthana vipassana or insight meditation in the tradition of the late venerable Mahasi Sayadaw of Burma. The Centre seeks its inspiration in the Buddhist Theravadan tradition and aims to develop an Australian Buddhism.

Courses are taught by visiting teachers, including monks and nuns from Burma and other countries.

Our Courses

Our current schedule offers activities from one-day introductory workshops to month long retreats — please see the summary of this year's activities below. The course information and registration brochure provides detailed information about booking procedures, the Centre's expectations about the conduct of retreats, the nature of accommodation and food and course costs.

Booking is by registration form (included with the brochure). This asks about meditation experience and personal information for the guidance of the teacher. This information is strictly confidential and only contact details, with consent of participants, are retained by the Centre after the course. More information about teachers.

Please note that Medlow Bath has an elevation of more than 1000 metres above sea level and low temperatures can be expected all year round, especially at night. Warm clothing (windproof jacket, woollen jumpers and socks, thermal underwear, scarf and hat) should be brought to ensure comfort when the weather turns cold. (The hall is centrally heated but walking meditation is usually done outside).
