Buddhist terminology can appear to be bound by negative terms.

In this course the meaning and use of such negative terms as non-self, suffering and emptiness will be explored first from Buddha’s discourses and Abhidhama teachings, before moving on to the analytical approach of the Madhyamaka school, and the Yogachara understanding of conceptuality.  Specific questions will be addressed such as: what does it mean to know the ultimate nature of things when the ultimate nature is often described as Emptiness; how is the Buddha said to know the Emptiness of all things; what is significant about the Buddhist approach to describing “what things are not” rather than “what they are”. This course is suitable for beginners and the more experienced providing an excellent opportunity to discover how language is used to uncover the meaning of some of the fundamental concepts in Buddhism.
