Auckland University Buddhist Society

Basics

Location:
The University Of Auckland‎, 22 Princes Street, Auckland, New Zealand

Anyone can join freely. AUBS is founded in 2007 with the aims of making the teachings of the Buddha accessible to the public. Since its beginnings, members have benefited spiritually and gained a sense of life-appreciating perspective to their daily existence. Venerable Ajahn Chandako, an American Buddhist monk, is the society’s spiritual director. He was ordained in Thailand, practices the Forest Tradition of Theravada Buddhism and is the principal speaker for the club’s seminar.

Occasionally, guest speakers from other Buddhist traditions are invited to give talks so that members can reflect on their life and their understanding of the Buddha’s teaching through different strands of Buddhist thought. Every gathering is complete with a guided meditation which helps equip one with the skills to practice mindfulness during their own time.

Club activities:

  • Seminar talks
  • Meditation sessions
  • Screenings on talks and films
  • Dinner outings
  • Book club (Buddhist books for loan)
  • Dhamma discussion nights
  • Vimutti monastery field trips

Seminars are usually held every fortnight. Friday 6 – 7:30pm at

Graeme Hill Lecture Theatre, Level 12,
Auckland Hospital Support Building, Park

Ajahn Chandako

Ajahn Chandako is an American Buddhist Monk. His fourteen years in robes have been spent mainly in deep jungles and remote hermitages in Thailand.

He has stayed with many of Thailand's most accomplished meditation masters, and spent two years with Ajahn Brahm in Perth.

His approach to Dhamma shines with sincerity, springing from a heartfelt commitment to enlightenment in this very life.
